Mexico's New President-Elect Lopez-Obrador Prepares To Ban Fracking In Mexico
As per recent announcement, Mexico's new President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador (known as "AMLO") is preparing to ban fracking in Mexico according to recent reports, and has reportedly canceled the planned purchase of 8 Seahawk helicopters by the Mexican Navy.
Lopez-Obrador was a recent major upset in the "status-quo" of Mexican politics. He broke from the establishmentarian party ("El Pri") and formed his own party, "Juntos Haremos Historia", which means "together we will make history". This new political force, formed from a coalition including another relatively young political force, "Las Morenas", made history when Lopez-Obrador not only won the Presidency, but did so by a startling margin, indicating that perhaps Mexico is crying for change.
In light of the fact that the corrupt "El Pri" have remained in power (generally through very questionable means, but that is a story for another time) for 70 years, and that Lopez-Obrador promised a new politics in Mexico, he is being looked to for leadership in an era when Mexico needs to be taken from a feudalistic economy to a people's economy. Senior Lopez-Obrador has been showing signs going into his inauguration that he is going to live up to the promises that won him the election.
Within days of winning his historic victory, Lopez-Obrador announced that he would not be living in the Mexican Presidential Palace, saying, "I will not live in a mansion of any kind", likewise vowing to cut his own salary and other presidential perks. He is also cancelling the planned purchase of 8 military-grade Seahawk helicopters, saying simply, "We cannot afford that expenditure". It is indeed rare in political discourse when I politician looks at the military and utters a question generally reserved for the ideological left; But how can we afford that?
In what appears to be a sign of a new direction in Mexico with regard to the energy sector, AMLO has also announced that he is preparing to ban fracking in Mexico upon his nomination.
As Mexico implements leftist policies to heal a broken feudalistic economy, and the "land of the free" continues its spiraling downward into far-right politics, Lopez-Obrador may indeed need to build a big, beautiful wall, and make Donald Trump pay for it.
